About The Artist Sonia Luévano

Sonia Luévano is a working artist based in Albuquerque, New Mexico

Sonia Luévano

Sonia Luévano is located in Albuquerque New Mexico and an avid part of the local art community.  Focusing on oil painting, she aims to live for art and to apply the romanticized philosophies of surrealism and the transcendent into all aspects of life. Part of her ideal is to make the world a more beautiful place by expressing true beauty in an imperfect world. In her work you may see symbols taken from not only her faith, but from the more metaphysical schools of thought as well from kabbalah, to more imaginative symbols inspired by dreams . Using lace to texture many of her pieces, she adds depth and beauty to an otherwise flat and stagnant area of a composition.

Sonia is an award winning artist with paintings placing "Best of Show" in several exhibitions.  She has been featured in juried and open call shows nationwide, and has had several commissions as well as the city of Albuquerque owning a piece in their collection.

Sonia graduated with a degree in Visual Arts as a classically trained painter where she formed her surreal style.  Not only is she a painter, but she is also a craftsman, designer, carpenter, photographer and all around renaissance woman.  You can see these eclectic elements in her work from her photo-realistic forms rooted into an abstract scene, to her handmade gallery-wrapped canvases.  Always educating herself to include more meaning into her work, she is currently pursuing a Masters in Sacred Art through Pontifex University.  In doing so, she is implementing elements of iconography (from the gothic to baroque) in her more recent pieces.  She will further study  symbolism in art that she holds dear in order to reach the world so that they may know: through all obstacles and undesirable events in life, there can always be found lovely details to help us endure. These captivating aspects are what produce perfection in our faulty nature.

"This is my desire and passion: to help inspire others view the world in this way so we can all find our own version of perfection."

My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.

I get inspired by those who are passionate about who they are and what they do.  Whether it be people in my community and art tribe, or artists through the centuries.  Some artists that inspire my thought process and work are Frida Kahlo, Diego Velasquez, Salvador Dali, and the great painters of the Sacred.

My main medium of use is oil paint, and I prefer to build and stretch my own canvases (usually in large scale).   Many layers of oil are used in my paintings and I like to use lace to texture using my thinning medium to hold it while it is painted over and dried.  Ripping the lace off is an integral and tension relieving step into creating the final step of my backgrounds in my works.
